Collage using papers made with push / pull forces – Science link


The Prep students engaged in some activities involving using FORCES of push and pull to make various painted papers. They rotated around three tables and made three different papers.

One activity was working with a partner with paper in a plastic tub along with some blobs of paint, and some large round wooden beads. (I didn’t have marbles) The children each held one side of the tub and rolled the beads around in the wet paint to force the paint to spread and mix.
Another activity was using texture combs to scrape through wet paint (using force to drag and mix the paint and make lines and marks. We used primary colours to reinforce our learning about colour.


The third activity was using different texture tools to dab paint around the paper to fill it with varied colours and textures.
The following lesson, students looked at some artworks by Australian artist Gabrielle Tito from Queensland. We discussed the use of pattern on the vase and the table cloth and the colours of the flowers.
The children then used templates to trace a vase on the back of one of their papers (the texture comb or the marble roll paper) and used the other for the table. These were glued onto a chosen colour background paper. They traced circles on the back of the dabbed paper to cut out for the flowers. Lines were added with a green marker for the stems. So many skills covered in this project, and one to do later in the Prep year when the students can work more independently. Of course the lesson would suit Year 1 and 2 as well.

Hi Sharon, I did this with Preps (5 year olds- depends on your cohort, as this may be too much for some groups of this age) but very well suited for Year 1 -2 as well.
