To fit in with a classroom topic of Community, in the Art room we looked at the physical community made up of streets, houses, schools, shops and other services.

Materials:
Grey strips of cover paper (for streets)
A3 cover paper for background (white or coloured)
Coloured squares and triangles (pre-cut -for houses etc.)
Small figure shapes- either a body shape to cut out or foam figures (I originally bought some instore from KMart and they had clothing to peel and stick)
Scissors, glue sticks, markers
Lesson steps:
Students began by arranging grey strips for roads and streets on their paper. Demonstrate placing and gluing in different directions to go to the edges of the paper: overlapping or intersecting, and cutting off excess.
Next they add squares and triangles to make houses, shops, the school etc. along the streets and markers to add details.
Finally they cut out a small figure (from a template) gluing on paper scraps for “clothes” or use the foam people to add stick on clothes to.
