Family in my house~ Prep

A perfect activity for the beginning of the year with Prep/Foundation students: it allows you to get to know the children while helping them feel comfortable with a familiar theme. Some preparation is required: gluing floss sticks onto paper to form a house shape. This can be done after the students draw their family members, serving as a frame around their pictures, or they can draw inside the shape. I’ve used this activity several times over the years with different materials. Students begin by drawing themselves and their family members (including pets, if they wish) using a black fine liner pen. Then, they can add color with markers, colored pencils, or liquid watercolors/food dye using a thin brush.

The ‘family in my house’ make a great display where students can look at how others draw people, and discuss who makes up their family.
