Preps looked at some close up flower artworks by Georgia O’Keefe, discussing shapes and colours and the use of space. Students practised drawing various flower shapes in their scrap book and then chose the design for their artwork. On a square of cartridge paper, they used a paint stick to draw the flower making sure it filled the space.
Liquid watercolours were used to fill the colour of the petals, and a cool colour (blue or green for any background). I added a squeeze of PVA glue in the centre, and children choose coloured glitter to pour on top.
Next lesson students made a bee from foil, yellow and black paper clay, (Magiclay or Model Magic) and netting for wings. (see video below) A smallish piece of foil is scrunched up and shaped into a long teardrop shape. Yellow paper clay is then pressed flat into a “blanket” to cover the foil all over, adding more as necessary. Next, black paper clay is rolled into a long thin sausage and wrapped around the body of the bee for stripes, a “stinger” to the pointed end of the shape, and eyes. Wings were cut from gold mesh and hot glued to the bee’s body.
