We started this project by doing drawing pot plants from observation. I bought a few pot plants from home and used a couple from around the school, including a large Monstera plant. Students were asked to observe the shapes of the leaves and add lines or shading for texture, drawing firstly in their scrap books.

Next lesson we viewed and discussed some artworks by Australian artist Tiffany Kingston from Byron Bay. Students used their drawings or other images of plants to draw the pot plants as a composition of an overlapping group of items.

Tiffany Kingston’s work features lots of plants and foliage and was perfect inspiration for looking at composition, space and variety for our still life artwork.
The students used a variety of materials to get different tones of green and texture on the foliage of the pot plants: coloured pencils, watercolour paints, paint pens, crayons and markers and used a sgraffito technique on the pots.
