Abstract Outer Space scene inspired by Peter Thorpe ~ Year 5-6

Students in Year 6 looked at the rocket paintings of Peter Thorpe which include abstract outer space backgrounds with a rocket, as inspiration to create their own artwork. Thorpe, based in North Carolina, USA has always had an interest in space exploration and space science. My students looked through his website to see the variation in colours, composition and techniques used to create effects. Then they chose one ‘rocket painting’ to describe the elements of art observed and inferred the techniques used to create the abstract effects.

Students experimented with various painting techniques, such as sponging, dabbing, flicking, and brushing, to create effects for their outer space scenes, including representations of planets. They sketched or traced circles for planet placement and applied acrylic paints using their selected techniques. Finally, they posted (on Seesaw) their completed backgrounds with labels identifying the techniques they used.

Next step was to draw and colour (paint/ pencil/ marker) a rocket using YouTube video tutorials (varying levels to choose from). Once complete, it was cut out and positioned on their outer space background.

Lesson plan with learning intentions, success criteria, activity steps and photos, materials needed, links to artworks to display, links to useful YouTube video tutorials to draw various rockets, elements of art vocab list to describe an artwork, student evaluation/ rubric, examples of students work.
